Side plank (Vasisthasana) tips by Maja: “Side plank is a powerful arm balance that challenges your ability to stay calm and focused. It increases flexibility in the wrists, strengthens your forearms, shoulders and spine. In Side plank position make sure to keep your core tight and body lifted. Extend your upper arm to the sky, reaching through your fingertips as you lift your hips and firm the triceps of both arms. Arms should be in line and make sure you are not propping yourself with your bottom arm. This exercise engages your abdominal oblique muscles so your hips should be away from the floor and your body should stay lengthened. Don’t forget to engage your glutes! Try to keep straight line with your body and hold for 30 seconds or more on each side.” Maja

Parivrtta Parsvakonasana alignment tips from our founder Nina Vukas @ninavukas.yoga “Every body is different and there is no perfect alignment we all need to fit in. However each asana has it’s function and this is what we look for and allow our body to find its own expression of this intention rather than try to look like someone else. 
Parivrtta Parsvakonasana is a spinal twist, stretching and engaging the muscles of our torso, and especially those very important side abdominal muscles (obliques). It rotates the spine and helps it keep a good range of motion, as well as massages the vital organs flushing out the toxins. I like this variation (rather than with back heel on the floor) as pelvis is better aligned giving us more stability.
It’s a wonderful asana I love to sequence, but it is also one of the most misaligned. The misalignment mostly happens in the spine, and this particular one is not very good for spinal discs. Going back to the intention and function of this asana - it’s a spinal twist. Not a combination of a spinal flexion (arched, bent back) and a rotation which isn’t a good combo especially for those with disc issues (photos with an x). To avoid flexing the spine, first make the space from the front leg hip, up the chest to the top of the head (like someone is pulling your head forward). Align your head with the pelvis (so it’s in front of it, not sideways) and look either sideways or up, don’t look back. Looking back will cause your spine to flex, and that’s what we’re trying to avoid. Generally in life, we should always look forward or up, not back;). Use your lower elbow to push against your leg and your upper hand to push against the lower to gently deepen the twist with each exhale.
